create your own sleep retreat at the springs
Written by Grace
One of the most commonly reported benefits of visiting our wellness destination is the way our experiences help prepare guests for a restful night’s sleep. Adults and children alike find they’re better able to unwind after soaking in a hot spring.
Whether you’re bathing in the daytime or coming to us after the sun goes down, we have a vast array of bathing rituals and activities that encourage a sound and satisfying slumber.
begin with a cleansing shower ritual
We always invite our guests to begin their experience at Peninsula Hot Springs with a shower, and having a shower towards the end of the day can be its own kind of special ritual. As you consciously step under the streaming water, visualise yourself washing away the events and concerns of the day so you can climb into bed with a clearer mind.
immerse yourself in a geothermal hot springs
Taking a warm or hot bath helps to draw circulation away from the heart and towards the extremities, which lowers your core temperature and signals to the body that it’s time for sleep. Immersing your body in a geothermal spring is a beautiful way to create this effect while connecting with others and with nature under an open sky.
discover one of our deeply restful new spa journeys
Drawing on ancient Ayurvedic rituals as well as modern science, our recently added 120-minute spa treatments include the Synthesis Organics Botanical Journey, Detox and Adrenal Boost Journey, Recovering Traveller and Sleep Support Therapy with Savasana. While all of our treatments are designed to rejuvenate, these four journeys have been specifically developed with deep rest in mind.
unwind in a relaxation space
Wander around our Bath House and you will come across a variety of relaxation spaces – from the relaxation dome and open-air sun roof beside the Amphitheatre to the cosy spots near the Food Bowl or surrounding the Sensory Dome. Meditate in a bean bag, curl up in a hammock or luxuriate on a daybed while reading your favourite book.
nourish yourself with foods containing tryptophan
Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that helps us sleep, as well as a range of other health benefits. Some of the Tryptophan we consume is converted into serotonin, which is one of the neurotransmitters involved in stabilising our moods. Our body doesn’t produce Tryptophan, so we must get it from our diet.
Foods that are rich in Tryptophan include salmon, poultry, eggs, spinach, seeds, nuts and soy products such as tofu. Our Spa Dreaming Centre dining room and Amphitheatre Cafe both serve an abundance of these foods as part of a seasonal, local, organic and whole menu philosophy. Book a night time Dine and Bathe package to promote better sleep.
experience hot and cold therapy
Like geothermal bathing, spending time in a sauna heats the entire body, meaning circulation is directed towards the extremities, which has the effect of preparing the body for sleep. Sweating it out in a sauna also induces muscle relaxation and burns calories to help tire us out before bed.
Shifting between hot and cold promotes dopamine (a happy hormone) and can build our mental resilience for lower cortisol (a stress hormone), meaning we feel more relaxed and have a better sleep.
You can experience hot and cold therapy with our various saunas, steam rooms, hot pools and outdoor showers, and our cold plunge pools and ice cave. You can also book in for a Fire and Ice Workshop daily and be guided through contrast therapy.
enhance with an exclusive group apothecary or massage workshop
If you’re visiting as part of a group, you might like to enhance your experience by adding an exclusive workshop. Book a group apothecary workshop to learn (and make) products such as muscle balms, essential oil concoctions and other tinctures and tonics perfect for inspiring calmness, or a massage workshop to learn the art of dissolving tension with touch.
For an especially immersive experience designed to inspire deep rest, explore our newest accommodation offering: our sleep-focused Eco Lodges. Each lodge has been thoughtfully curated with ambient lighting, soundscapes and in-room amenities to facilitate a blissful sleep.
