celebrating Diwali at Peninsula Hot Springs
Written by Amelia
Diwali is a Festival of Lights that illuminates the hearts and houses of celebrating communities and is a commemoration of faith and fortune.
Celebrations often begins in late October with a highlight being the main event; Diwali (Deepavali). The annual festival is marked across five days determined by the Hindu Lunar calendar and signifies a triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and the profound human ability to overcome adversity.
Beyond all political views and opinions, Diwali is observed amongst those who practice Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism, and is an opportunity for a joyous celebration of our shared humanity, a beautiful moment for the community to gather and celebrate the light within.
During Diwali celebrations, the Festival of Lights comes alive as communities decorate their homes, streets and public places with bright oil lamps, candles and colourful lights all heightened with a spectacular display of fireworks, illuminating the night sky. Gift-giving and feasting is a gesture of love and affection, and prayers and rituals take place across temples as communities seek divine blessings and guidance.
New beginnings are revered during Diwali, with the festival considered an auspicious time to start new ventures and settle old debts. It is believed that starting something new during this time brings good fortune and luck for the year ahead.
