. . . Entering the bathing area is like stepping into another world, a sanctuary where the body and mind are calmed by the soothing aroma or steam, the sound of running water, the casual banter of bathers sharing news and gossip. It’s a place where time is forgotten and lingering is part of the code of harmony.

Hot spring water flows at 47º from an underground aquifer 637 metres below the surface rising to within 10 metres of the surface under its own pressure. The thermal mineral water temperature in the many pools varies from 38ºC to 43ºC.

The geothermal water contains a total of 3,200 PPM (parts per million) of total dissolved minerals. The primary mineral groups include bicarbonate, magnesium, potassium and sodium. Good levels of calcium, boron, selenium as well as several key trace minerals are present in the water.

A detailed analysis of the geothermal water was conducted by the Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences in New Zealand (ref table) (pdf). The analyses were sent to the Mineral Water Association in Moscow and the Hot Spring Research Institute in Tokyo both of which confirmed they are ideal for healthy bathing and relaxation.

The mineral water is so pure it has been officially classified, under the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Guidelines as being suitable as a “potable (drinking) water supply”. The minerals make the water taste like a highly charged pure sports drink. When you visit why not try the taste of the mineral water. After all in Europe they have been drinking hot spring mineral water for good health and wellbeing for hundreds of years.

The water, flowing from deep underground, originally fell as rain in northern Australia, seeped deep into the ground and travelled slowly South over the millennia. It is estimated to be at least 10,000 years old and possibly much older. As the water passed through the various rock and sand layers it became heavily laden in minerals, trace elements and negative ions. The official classification of the water, as advised by the Japan Hot Spring Research Institute, is a Sodium Chloride Bicarbonate Spring.

In the baths the water flows, untouched and without the addition of any chemicals, direct from the source to the pools. It enters the pool at one end and flow in a continual stream to the other end and then on out to the ocean. There is no re-circulation as this would result in a cooling of the water. A bath at the hot springs is more akin to a float in an ancient river of mineral waters where you are always at the source of the river and no one is above you. There could not be a cleaner bathing experience. You will never have felt as fresh in your life as you do once you step out of the thermal mineral waters at Peninsula Hot Springs.
