A three day showcase of the Healing Arts

A Healing Arts Tent has been designated in the serene grounds of the Peninsula Hot Springs Carnivale event, featuring demonstrations, treatments, talks and education by a range of practitioners.

Organised by chiropractor Hugh Bevege, the Carnivale 06 Healing Arts Tent is “an attempt to build awareness about some of the techniques that are out there and what their benefits are.”

The program is evolving, but one of the many therapies locked in so far is a fascinating insight into kinesiology with Peter McClellan.

The Buteyko breathing technique will also be explained by Paul O’Connell, developed in Russia, Buteyko is a particularly useful tool in managing asthma and sleep disorders.

The Alexander technique - postural awareness - will be demonstrated and explained by Marilyn Lock, who will also explain Nia Dance, a combination of the martial arts, dance arts and healing arts.

According to Marilyn, “Nia is an expressive body-minded movement and lifestyle practice, embracing fitness and health. The original vision of The Nia Technique was born from the idea that fitness could look, feel and be experienced differently - in a less painful, more pleasurable way. This vision included barefoot aerobics, holistic and integrated fitness, wellness, personal growth, education and community.”

“Traditional benefits of Nia include cardiovascular conditioning, flexibility, strength, balance, endurance and relaxation,” Marilyn said.

“Nia delivers more esoteric benefits through the conscious application of specific meditation and concentration techniques. Nia engages the spirit and touches people's hearts, giving them permission to play and more intimately connect with themselves and with others. It encourages inner exploration and self-discovery and guides students to move through their own unique, infinitely creative space.”

Wendy Rosenfeldt will be talking about Ayurvedic medicine, derived from India it is the oldest organised medical system in the world, which has regained momentum in the last 20 years. Pulse reading is used in Ayurveda to determine your constitutional type annd to diagnose imbalances. There will be the opportunity for sample pulse reading on Sunday at 3pm after the talk on Ayurveda at 2pm.

Homeopath Robyn Thompson will also be available to discuss health issues and their treatment.

Reflexology will also be explained and demonstrated: a treatment that works on the basis that the feet have a reflex to all parts of the body, and give signs to ills elsewhere in the body.

An iridology camera will be set up to take pictures of your iris, a mirror for the body. An iridologist can determine from the pictures various areas of weakness or dysfunction in the body.

Hugh tells us yoga classes are also being organised to start and end each of the three Carnivale days.
